Basketball Tournament Rules Proposal

The following is a rough draft of the rules that we think could be implemented for a successful basketball tournament. If there are any suggestions, please email us at administration@soberball.com. :
  1. All players and coaches must be a member of a twelve-step program.
  2. Games will consist of two 12 minute halves, with a 5 minute break.
  3. Each player will have a total of 3 fouls to give. One technical foul results in ejection from the game. Teams will be given sufficient warning, as to avoid sudden and surprised ejection. Three technical fouls over the course of the tournament results in ejection from the tournament. What constitutes a technical foul?
  4. Each team will have a total of 7 players. These 7 players must be registered at the beginning of tournament play. There will be no additions after play begins.
  5. In case of tie, there will be a 4 minute tie breaker. Tie breakers will continue until a winner is determined.
  6. Each team will have three time outs per game and can be used at any point during the game they wish (first half, second or tie breakers). Timeout will be indicated by indicating to the referee that time out is requested then by holding up 1, 2, or 3 fingers for 30, 60, or 120 seconds.
  7. Shot clock will be set to 25 seconds on every change of possession.

Remember, the object of this tournament will be to have some fun and stay sober for another day. With that in mind, it is imperative that we police ourselves when it comes to stacking teams with non-alcoholics or non-addicts. Success of this tournament is weighed on our ability to create another reason for the newcommer and ourselves to stay sober. If sobriety is not required, then we have failed.
